Youth Media Alliance is proud to support Project Sunbeam: Kids’ Rights in Canadian Media, a new white paper commissioned by Rocket Fund Canada that calls for Canada to put the rights of children and youth first in how we create, fund and govern their media.

The report highlights the urgent challenges facing Canada’s children’s and youth media industry and calls for a Team Canada approach to building a stronger future for the sector. Its six priorities include recognizing children and youth as rights holders, creating a protected Children’s and Youth Media Fund, making discoverability and audience development part of the investment, strengthening our understanding of childhood as it changes, and ensuring platforms and AI are accountable to children’s rights and development.

The white paper includes 36 recommendations, 137 supporting findings and 49 key findings.

At YMA, we share the belief that children and youth are not simply an audience. They are rights holders and must have a meaningful voice in the decisions that shape the media they watch, listen to and engage with.

Project Sunbeam contributes to an important conversation about the future of Canadian children’s and youth media and our collective responsibility to ensure that Canadian and Indigenous stories continue to reach young audiences.

We invite you to read the white paper and explore its recommendations.
