Youth Media Alliance Statement on the Review of the CRTC Online Streaming Contribution Decision

The Youth Media Alliance-Alliance Médias Jeunesse (YMA-AMJ) is concerned by the Government of Canada's decision to review the recent CRTC determination requiring foreign streaming services to contribute to the Canadian broadcasting system.

The Youth Media Alliance-Alliance Médias Jeunesse (YMA-AMJ) is concerned by the Government of Canada's decision to review the recent CRTC determination requiring foreign streaming services to contribute to the Canadian broadcasting system.

This decision creates uncertainty for Canada's children's and youth media sector at a time when producers are already facing significant financial pressures. Children's programming is one of the most vulnerable genres in the Canadian media landscape and relies heavily on public policy supports and regulatory frameworks to remain sustainable.

The implementation of the Online Streaming Act was intended to ensure that all companies benefiting from Canadian audiences contribute fairly to the creation of Canadian stories. Any delay to that objective jeopardizes slowing investment in the development, production and distribution of Canadian content for young audiences.

The YMA recognizes the need for government review and consultation. However, we believe it is essential that the principle of meaningful contributions from foreign streaming platforms be maintained and that children's and youth media remain a priority within any future funding framework.

To support our members, the YMA is actively engaging with Canadian Heritage, the CRTC, and industry partners to advocate for the needs of children's and youth content creators. We will continue to monitor developments, share information with members, and champion policies that support the creation of high-quality Canadian content for children, youth, and families.

Canada's young audiences deserve access to stories that reflect their lives, communities, and cultures as Canadians. The YMA remains committed to ensuring that children's and youth media producers have a strong voice throughout this process.
