A strong and necessary signal for youth and for the industry
Montreal, September 5, 2025 — Youth Media Alliance (YMA) warmly welcomes the report of the Task Force on the Future of Audiovisual in Quebec, released this week. For YMA, this marks a decisive step toward greater recognition of youth as a pillar of our culture and of our collective future.
“We are extremely encouraged to see youth placed at the center of several recommendations. This aligns directly with our mission: inspiring today and building tomorrow” said Athena Georgaklis, Co-Chair of YMA.
Among the key measures YMA hopes to see implemented quickly:
- Reserving 30% of SODEC funding for youth content, providing a real lever for independent producers;
- Expanding support to digital media, including video games, allowing young audiences to access local creations on the platforms they use;
- Establishing accelerators to ease bureaucratic restrictions that needlessly slow down productions;
- Creating new revenue streams for the industry, including a share of the Quebec Sales Tax (QST) from online services and subscriptions reinvested into the audiovisual sector;
Introducing measures that promote media literacy, so that high-quality audiovisual content can be more effectively integrated into schools;
- Increasing Télé-Québec’s budget to enable it to invest in the development of youth brands.
- These proposals come at a critical moment. Recent statistics show a historic decline in youth production volume, threatening the vitality of a sector that is essential to the cultural, identity, and educational development of young Quebecers.
“The industry is suffering greatly right now. That is why it is urgent that these recommendations translate into concrete actions. Our children and teens need content that reflects who they are, inspires them, and equips them to understand the world” added Athena Georgaklis, Co-Chair of YMA.
YMA reaffirms its commitment to working with the government, institutions, and the entire industry to ensure these measures are implemented quickly. Investing in youth means safeguarding the transmission of our culture, identity, and language for generations to come.
Congratulations on such a comprehensive report… the coming months will be very interesting!
